A Romanian crime network cloned websites of Irish trading companies and sold phantom goods including tractors, caravans and farm machinery, stealing about €24 million from victims across Europe between 2016 and 2020, with roughly €7 million laundered through Irish banks. Gheorghe Gherge, 35, of Drumcondra, Dublin, and Daniel Semen, 32, both Romanian, were targeted under Operation Omena by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau after the gang's five Irish cells in Dublin, Donegal and Cork were closed. Gherge was extradited from the UK and Semen from Romania in January 2022. On 20 December 2022, Judge Dara Hayes at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court jailed Gherge for three and a half years and Semen for two years and eight months after both pleaded guilty to charges of using false instruments and money laundering.
