Daniel McDonnell, 28, a man serving a mandatory life sentence for murder, was arrested in January after threatening to slit a prison officer's throat with a sharpened piece of metal during a routine cell check at Wheatfield Prison, Clondalkin, on 12 August 2021. He pleaded guilty on 2 May to threatening to kill or cause serious harm to the officer. On 8 June 2023, Dublin Circuit Criminal Court set a headline sentence of three years, reduced it to two years and backdated it to his guilty plea. The two-year sentence is the latest development reported.
