Daniel Lynch, a 25-year-old man from Ballymun, Dublin, pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 29 November 2022 to coercive control of a woman between 19 September 2020 and 15 January 2022, and admitted making a threat to kill her by WhatsApp voice message on 15 January 2022 in breach of a protection order. The woman, who is entitled to anonymity under the 2018 Domestic Violence Act, told the court that Lynch controlled her finances, phone, and social media, physically and verbally abused her, and used food as a form of discipline. She spent two nights in a psychiatric ward and said the emotional and mental torture was harder than the physical abuse. Judge Martina Baxter adjourned sentencing to February 2023.
