On 22 August 2020, Gardaí searched the home of Daniel Kiernan, a 34-year-old man from north Longford, and found ten cannabis plants and two plastic containers of cannabis herb. Initial inquiries valued the cannabis at over €20,000, but the actual value was just over €5,000. Mr Kiernan admitted to possessing the drugs for his own use, having grown the plants since February 2020 to manage lower back pain from a car accident. At Longford Circuit Criminal Court, Judge Keenan Johnson indicated his intention to issue a Section 1(2) of the Probation Act, and sentencing was adjourned to 11 October with a drug-free condition and a urine analysis directed.
