Daniel Keane, a 36-year-old man and serving noncommissioned officer in the Defence Forces, pleaded guilty to assaulting a taxi driver with a fire poker in Dublin in December 2019. The taxi driver picked up Keane and his partner at 4am from the Camden Street area, and Keane returned to the cab with a 2ft black fire poker, hitting the driver on the hip and causing him to fall. The driver was taken to hospital with injuries to his face and hip, and Keane also made off without paying the 20.80 euro fare. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court in February 2023, Judge Orla Crowe handed Keane an 18-month sentence, suspended in full for two years on strict conditions.
