latest first- Sophie Toscan du Plantier murder under investigation in West Cork Murder · Co. Cork
Sophie Toscan du Plantier, a 39-year-old French film producer, was beaten to death with a rock and concrete block outside her holiday home near Schull, West Cork, on 23 December 1996. English man Ian Bailey, 66, was the prime suspect; he was arrested twice but never charged in Ireland, and a French court convicted him in absentia in May 2019 and sentenced him to 25 years, though Irish courts refused extradition on three occasions. Bailey died of a heart attack in Bantry in January 2024. The Garda Serious Crime Review Team has been conducting a full review since June 2022, and the investigation remains active with DNA experts examining exhibits from the scene.
