Shane Murray, 19 at the time, carried out an unprovoked one-punch assault on Damien Merrigan, 49, at Aston Quay, Dublin 2, on 7 September 2023, causing serious head and facial fractures. Merrigan, who was homeless, was treated in Beaumont Hospital for seven days and later died in July 2025 of unrelated causes. Murray, who has 81 previous convictions, was identified from CCTV, left the jurisdiction, and returned voluntarily in 2024 to hand himself in to gardaí. He pleaded guilty to assault causing serious harm and was sentenced on 17 July 2026 to eight years, with the final two years suspended on strict conditions, to run consecutive to his current sentence.
