• Two men jailed for nine years over robbery of woman in Cork Robbery

Two men grabbed a 93-year-old woman's handbag, knocked her to the ground and dragged her along the road at Charlemont Terrace, Wellington Road, Cork city, on 9 November 2022 after she had collected her pension at St Luke's Post Office. Damian Fitzgerald, 35, of Inniscarra Road, Fairhill, Cork, and Damien Long, 32, of no fixed abode, were arrested on 12 November 2022 and charged with robbery on 14 November. Both men pleaded guilty at Cork Circuit Criminal Court in April 2023. On 9 May 2023, Judge Helen Boyle sentenced each to nine years in prison, describing the attack as a scarcely comprehensible act of thuggery in broad daylight.
