  • Former Longford councillor jailed for €2.6m money laundering Money laundering · Co. Longford

Frank Kilbride, 70, a man and former Fine Gael politician from Ballinalee, Co Longford, was charged in November 2023 with three counts of money laundering totalling €2,604,564.05 through companies linked to Cyril 'Dublin Jimmy' McGuinness. The laundering, which took place between October 2017 and March 2019, came to light during searches in November 2019 connected to the kidnapping and torture of Kevin Lunney in Co Fermanagh. Kilbride pleaded guilty at Longford District Court in December 2023 and was remanded in custody on 26 July 2024 after his sentence hearing was adjourned. On 30 July 2024, Judge Kenneth Connolly at Longford Circuit Court sentenced him to four years and six months, suspending the final 15 months for three years with conditions including a ban on registering new companies.

Alan Harte (44), Alan O'Brien (44) and Darren Redmond (31), all men, were convicted by the Special Criminal Court in November 2021 of false imprisonment and intentionally causing harm, while a fourth accused, Luke O'Reilly (68), was acquitted.
