In the early hours of 4 February 2018, a 19-year-old woman with a mild intellectual disability was grabbed by a stranger on a street in a town in the west of Ireland, forced to the ground, and raped. She was then threatened and forced back to the stranger's apartment, where she was raped two more times before being released the next morning. Costel Pirvu, a 39-year-old Romanian man formerly of Kilreekill, Loughrea, County Galway, was arrested that evening and found guilty of three counts of rape and one of false imprisonment after a nine-day trial at the Central Criminal Court in 2022. The Court of Appeal quashed his original six-and-a-half-year sentence on 19 January 2023, substituting ten years' imprisonment with the final year-and-a-half suspended, backdated to August 2018.
