latest first- Appeal court orders Louth man to serve three years for witness intimidation Intimidation of a witness and criminal damage · Co. Louth
On 27 March 2022, Conor McLoughlin, 44, rammed the Volkswagen Passat of Grainne McGuigan, a witness in a case against him, at Drummullagh, Omeath, Louth, while it was travelling at 60 to 70 miles per hour, then rear-ended it three or four more times before driving towards his mother's house. The victim's family had followed McLoughlin to his family home to photograph evidence that he had breached his bail condition to stay out of the Omeath area, and Gardaí and the Armed Support Unit found him hiding in the attic of his mother's house. McLoughlin, who has 30 previous convictions, pleaded guilty to intimidating a witness and criminal damage, and Judge Dara Hayes fully suspended his sentences at Dundalk Circuit Court in May 2024. The Court of Appeal quashed that sentence in January 2025 as too lenient, ordering him to serve three years with the final year suspended for two years, plus a concurrent three-year term for criminal damage. The sentence runs from June 2024, when he was released from custody on an earlier matter, and he was directed to present himself at Dundalk Garda Station on 3 February.
