A 17-year-old Irish woman was gang raped and sexually assaulted by five men in a car in the early hours of 27 December 2016 after becoming separated from friends in Tullamore, Co Offaly. The men drove her to a remote location near Kilbeggan, Co Westmeath, where she was raped in turn, and then to the Whitehall car park in Tullamore where she was raped again and orally raped. Four men were convicted by a jury at the Central Criminal Court in April 2022 and a fifth, Conor Byrne, pleaded guilty to rape; all five were sentenced on 2 June 2022 to a combined 66 years. Three of the men, Gabriel Gomes Da Rocha, Marcos Vinicius De Silva Umbelino and Eduardo Dias Ferreira Filho, appealed their sentences, and the Court of Appeal heard the case on 9 December 2025 with judgment reserved by Mr Justice Patrick McCarthy.
