On June 18, 2023, Margaret Wright, 73, died from blunt force injuries when the car driven by her grandson Connor Wright, 32, of Kilrush, crashed in a single-car accident in west Clare. Wright told gardaí a fox or badger came onto the road while he was driving. He pleaded guilty to drink-driving at Ballinagun West, Cree, at Ennis District Court in April 2024. Judge Alec Gabbett imposed a two-year mandatory driving ban, noting the alcohol reading was not particularly high. An inquest into Wright's death was held, and a deposition stated she was not wearing a seat belt.
