Con Desmond, 91, a man also known as Brother Cornelius, was sentenced at Waterford Circuit Criminal Court to four years and three months in prison with the final year suspended after being found guilty on nine counts of indecent assault against a child. The abuse took place between September 1978 and December 1980 inside his office at St Stephen's De La Salle National School in Waterford city, where he was principal. The victim, a man who wished to retain anonymity, said he still feels pain when he remembers the abuse and used drink and drugs to cope. Gardaí revealed Desmond has previous convictions for offences of a similar nature, including a 2013 conviction on 13 counts. Detectives had attempted to speak to Desmond at his home in Ennis, Co Clare, in July 2024.
