• Two Limerick gardaí suspensions lifted in perverting course of justice case Attempting to pervert the course of justice · Co. Limerick

  Two Limerick gardaí who were suspended in November 2020 during a GNBCI investigation into alleged unlawful squaring of fixed charge penalty points had their suspensions lifted on 12 February 2026. The two officers, who were never charged, had previously made a High Court application seeking their suspensions to be lifted. In the same investigation, four serving gardaí and a retired Garda superintendent were acquitted by a jury following a nine-week trial at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court, and the Garda Commissioner lifted their suspensions immediately after the trial. Some 130 gardaí in the southern region were interviewed as part of the GNBCI investigation.

  Retired Irish superintendent Eamon O'Neill, 55, and four serving Irish gardaí – Sergeant Anne-Marie Hassett, 37, Sergeant Michelle Leahy, 46, Garda Tom McGlinchey, 49, and Garda Colm Geary, 35 – were arrested in April 2021 and charged in May 2021 with 39 counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice over alleged interference with fixed charge penalty notices for road traffic offences between October 2016 and September 2019 in the Limerick and Mid-West region. The charges followed a two-year GNBCI investigation into the alleged squaring away of traffic fines for motorists including GAA players and a politician. The trial began at Limerick Circuit Criminal Court in November 2025 before Judge Roderick Maguire, and on 26 January 2026 a jury returned unanimous not guilty verdicts on all 39 counts.
