    At about 2am on 23 August 2017, off-duty Garda Sergeant Colm Finnerty followed a Toyota Yaris at the junction of Kingsland Parade and Portobello Road in Dublin. Darren Boyd, 29, and Shane Thomas, 30, were later charged with assaulting him, and both pleaded not guilty. During a struggle, a firearm discharged, and Finnerty alleged that Boyd pulled the gun down and caused it to fire. A non-jury trial opened before Judge John Hughes at Dublin District Court, and on 9 March 2023 Finnerty gave evidence, with the hearing set to resume the following day.
