latest first- Balbriggan murder man due for release ordered to stay away from Meath Murder · Co. Dublin
Colin Whelan, 55, was sentenced to life imprisonment in April 2005 for the murder of his wife Mary Gough, 27, in Balbriggan, Co Dublin, in February 2001. He strangled her six months after their marriage and pushed her body down the stairs of their home to make the death look like an accident, then fled to Majorca under the fake name Martin Sweeney before being recognised by a Garda and extradited. He has served 22 years and is due for release in the coming months. Under his release licence he has been ordered not to return to Stamullen or Gormanston, Co Meath, where the couple met and where Gough grew up.
