Clifton Collins, a 55-year-old former beekeeper, grew cannabis in rented houses and sold the drug to criminals, including in Crumlin, Dublin. He invested in bitcoin in 2011 and 2012 and created 12 virtual wallets, which were seized in 2019 and whose access codes were later lost after being hidden in a fishing rod case at a rented property in Co Galway. In late 2020 he surrendered assets worth €1.2 million to the State as proceeds of crime, and he was jailed for five years. In March 2026 the Criminal Assets Bureau, supported by Europol, opened one of the wallets and seized bitcoin valued at an estimated €30 million, the first of the 12 wallets it has been able to access.
