latest first- Appeal court quashes lifetime driving ban in Portlaoise fatal crash Dangerous driving causing death · Co. Laois
On 18 October 2008, Brian Kelly, a 43-year-old man, was driving on the Mountmellick Road in Portlaoise, Laois, when his car crashed into a building on a left bend, killing 24-year-old Claire Hennessy. A Garda forensic report found speed and alcohol intake were the sole causes, and Kelly's blood alcohol concentration was 172mg per 100ml. Kelly pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death and was sentenced on 15 December 2009 to two years in prison suspended for two years and a lifetime driving disqualification. In July 2024, the Court of Appeal quashed the lifetime ban, replacing it with a 20-year disqualification, and re-imposed the suspended sentence.
