Ciaran Donovan, a 41-year-old man from Ashfield, Co Kildare (reports differ at 42), pleaded guilty in July 2023 to money laundering arising from his operation of an app linked to the King Kong Media illegal streaming service, which gave thousands of users access to copyrighted Sky Sports, BT Sports and other subscription TV channels for about €70 a year between January 2016 and March 2022. He was sent forward for trial in June 2023, and his bail was revoked in April 2024 after the service was found still operating. In June 2024 he faced further charges for laundering over €430,000 between October 2021 and November 2023, and in July 2024 he was convicted of laundering more than €900,000. On 31 July 2024, Judge Martina Baxter at Naas Circuit Court sentenced him to three years and four months with the final two years suspended, leaving 16 months to serve.
