• Man sentenced for assault and claw hammer offence in Clare Assault; criminal trespass; producing a claw hammer · Co. Clare

Ciaran Cullinan, a 34-year-old man, was sentenced at Ennis Circuit Court for assaulting 75-year-old farmer Noel Meere in September 2022 and for producing a claw hammer and criminal trespass at the Meere property in Barefield, outside Ennis, in February 2022. Meere told the court that Cullinan punched him repeatedly around the head and stabbed him in the neck during the September assault, while Cullinan raised a claw hammer over his head during the February incident. Cullinan received a four-year, eight-month prison term in July 2023 for the assault, with an additional one-year consecutive term for the February offences, and is barred from going within 15km of Barefield until 2031. The court heard that Cullinan's targeting of Meere was linked to cannabis-induced psychosis, and Cullinan had no prior convictions before 2021.
