Ciarán Cannon, a Galway East TD, received three abusive and threatening phone calls in February, May, and June 2022 from a man identifying himself as James Killen. The 57-year-old suspect, a native of Derry who has lived in Athenry, County Galway, since 2005, was charged with making the menacing calls. Cannon complained to gardaí after the final call, saying it left him fearing for his and his wife's personal safety. The case was adjourned to a sitting of Loughrea District Court.

He was charged in November 2023 and contested both charges at a hearing in September 2024, where CCTV footage showed the bag missing Rabbitte.
