• Appeal dismissed in Castlebar house party rape case Rape · Co. Mayo

Shane Noonan, a man now 30, raped Ciara Mangan, a woman now 30, at a house party in Castlebar, Co Mayo, on 11 May 2013, while she was drifting in and out of consciousness on a bathroom floor after feeling unwell from a can of cider. Both were 18 at the time and co-workers at a fast food restaurant. Noonan was arrested after reports were made to gardaí in 2014 and 2018, and he pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court in 2023, receiving a sentence of eight years with the final year suspended. The Court of Appeal dismissed his appeal on 10 April 2025, finding no error in principle in the original sentence.
