Christopher McCarthy, 74, a man and former Franciscan brother from County Cork, was sentenced at Limerick Circuit Court in June 2022 to three years' imprisonment with the final nine months suspended for indecent assault and sexual assault of a 10-year-old boy. The allegations dated back 30 years; McCarthy was questioned by Gardaí twice in March 2019 and denied all allegations. A jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts on two counts on 6 October 2020, with a nolle prosequi entered on a further charge. McCarthy had previously been convicted in January 2019 of masturbating in front of an 18-year-old male at Knock Shrine, Co Mayo, and received a fully suspended three-month sentence at Castlebar District Court in January 2020. The victim, who cannot be named, told the court the assaults had changed his life forever.
