latest first- Man jailed for rape and sexual assault of stepdaughter in Dublin Rape · Co. Dublin
Christina Hayes, 36, was raped and sexually assaulted by her stepfather Tommy Barry, 67, between 1996 and 1998 in their family home in Dublin when she was between six and seven years old. A primary school teacher reported the incident to the HSE in early 1999 after the child wrote on a worksheet, and the girl was moved to live with her grandparents. Barry escaped from Shelton Abbey prison in Co Wicklow in July 1999 while serving a sentence and lived under aliases in the UK for over 25 years. In 2016, a Facebook photograph led to a fingerprint match with UK authorities, and Barry was extradited to Ireland under a European Arrest Warrant. He was convicted of six counts of sexual assault and two counts of rape at the Central Criminal Court in January 2026 and sentenced to 12½ years by Ms Justice Karen O'Connor on 20 April 2026.
