latest first- Pastor sentenced for social welfare fraud in Louth Fraud · Co. Louth
Christian Bona, a 53-year-old naturalised Irish citizen and pastor in Drogheda, obtained €29,000 in social welfare payments while absent from the State between March 2015 and July 2016, taking 30 flights within Europe. The fraud was discovered when one of his brothers attempted to sign-on in his name at Ardee civic offices while he was out of the country, and CCTV showed his two brothers collecting payments in his name. He was originally charged with 56 counts of theft of job seekers allowance and pleaded guilty to 10 sample counts at Dundalk Circuit Court. In February 2024, Judge Dara Hayes sentenced him to two years and three months, suspended for five years, with €19,893 still outstanding in repayments.
