Charles James Carr, 68, a taxi driver from Longford, was stopped on the N4 on 15 July 2020 during a Garda surveillance operation, and 123.8 grams of cocaine and 996 grams of cannabis were found in his silver Skoda taxi. He pleaded guilty at Longford Circuit Court to possession of controlled drugs for the purpose of selling. In October 2022, Judge Keenan Johnson sentenced him to a five-year suspended sentence, reduced from seven years due to an element of duress, along with a 10-year driving disqualification, a bond of good behaviour, and 12 months' probation supervision. The judge told Carr he was lucky not to receive a custodial sentence.
