A far-right group calling itself the Irish Defence Army planned to firebomb the Maryam Mosque on Monivea Road, Galway, between 4 and 5 November 2025. Gardaí foiled the plot when a drugs unit stopped a car in Portlaoise, Co Laois, on 4 November 2025 and found pipe bomb components, weapons and a group manifesto. Garrett Pollock, 36, from Co Down; Karolis Peckauskas, 39, a Lithuanian national from Co Louth; and Darren Gorman, 34, from Co Laois, pleaded guilty at the Special Criminal Court in June 2026, while co-accused Charles Flynn, 35, from Co Limerick, remains charged. On 30 October 2026, the Special Criminal Court sentenced Pollock to 10.5 years with the final year suspended, and Gorman and Peckauskas to eight years each with the final year suspended.
