  Anthony Canning, 74, of Fadden, Carrig, Birr, Co Offaly, was sentenced to seven years in prison at the Central Criminal Court in June 2024 after pleading guilty to two charges of indecent assault, three charges of sexual assault and one charge of oral rape. The offences took place in his home between December 1987 and December 1993, when the victim, Celine Daly, was between seven and 13 years old. Canning, a former army sergeant, was married to the victim's aunt and was between 37 and 43 during the abuse. He was taken in for questioning by gardaí in April 2021 and initially denied the allegations before later admitting he had touched the victim. The judge set a headline sentence of 10 years but imposed seven years, noting Canning had no previous convictions.
