latest first- Man sentenced for assault and cannabis possession in Letterkenny Assault; possession of cannabis · Co. Donegal
Catherine Gallagher, a 24-year-old woman, suffered a broken nose after being punched by 16-year-old Derek McGinley at a house party in Meadowbank, Letterkenny, Co Donegal, on 13 January 2018. McGinley and another man had sprayed Fabreeze and bleach in the room before the victim slapped him twice, after which he punched her and she fell with blood gushing from her nose. The case was heard at Letterkenny District Court, where Judge Paul Kelly found the facts proven and noted the accused had numerous opportunities to retreat. McGinley, who was 18 at sentencing, was given a four-month sentence back-dated to 24 April, with the balance suspended on a €100 bond, and the Probation Act applied to one of two cannabis possession charges.
