Cathal McCarron, a 35-year-old former All-Ireland winning Gaelic footballer who played for Tyrone, was convicted at Naas District Court on 10 November 2022 for failing to produce insurance or a driving licence to gardaí at Osberstown, Kildare, on 29 March 2021. His solicitor told the court he had proof of his driving licence but not proof of insurance. Judge Desmond Zaidan imposed a total fine of €2,250, a two-year driving ban, and gave him three months to pay. The judge noted McCarron had three previous driving disqualifications from Northern Ireland and said he would have jailed him for having convictions in the Republic.
