Carolyn Riguad, 63, a woman from Callan, Co Kilkenny, pleaded guilty to sample counts of theft and producing a false instrument in an indictment of 270 counts. Between November 2009 and February 2016, while running the Irish arm of a UK business company, she diverted €87,000 into her own accounts by altering cheques. The fraud was discovered in 2016 when she went on sick leave, and 258 cheques with discrepancies were uncovered during the company's investigation. She was sentenced to one year's imprisonment at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court on 21 February 2023, with Judge Martin Nolan noting he would have imposed five years had she been in good health.
