  • Man left without conviction for firework offence in Longford Reckless endangerment; throwing · Co. Longford

On 25 April 2022, Dylan Smith, aged 21, of Edgeworthstown, Co Longford, placed a firework inside a traffic cone with a piece of tissue paper at Quinns Hardware Car Park, Main Street, Edgeworthstown, and lit it before running away. Sgt Caroline Keogh, a female garda, sustained burns to her legs and a gash to her hand when the firework exploded as she moved to extinguish the flame. Smith was charged with reckless endangerment and with throwing, directing or propelling an ignited firework towards a person or property. He pleaded guilty to the firework charge but contested the reckless endangerment charge on a point of law. In March 2023, Judge Vincent Deane at Longford District Court dismissed the point of law and left Smith without a criminal conviction under Section 1(1) of the Probation Act, with €2,000 in compensation accepted by Sgt Keogh.
