  • State apology for failings in Dublin prison officer murder probe Murder · Co. Dublin

    Brian Stack, a man and chief prison officer at Portlaoise Prison, was shot in the neck by members of the Provisional IRA outside the National Stadium in Dublin on 25 March 1983 after leaving a boxing match. He died from his injuries in September 1984, leaving behind his wife and three young sons. No one has ever been arrested or charged, though the IRA has accepted responsibility and Gardaí issued an alert for an unnamed IRA suspect in December 2023. The case remains under investigation with new lines of enquiry being followed. On 21 October 2026, Taoiseach Micheál Martin will deliver a formal State apology in the Dáil for the failings in three separate Garda investigations into the murder.
