Gardaí searched the home of Brian Shiels, 33, at Umlagh Cottages, Carrigart, County Donegal on 21 October 2020 and found €19,000 in cash in his bedroom drawer, a further €9,040 in a bedroom belonging to his sister, and a cocaine press he had built himself in a shed. Shiels made full admissions to gardaí, including that the cash was proceeds of the sale and supply of drugs, and pleaded guilty to one charge of money laundering at Letterkenny Circuit Court in January 2022. Judge John Aylmer sentenced him to three years' imprisonment with the final 12 months suspended, conditional on his engagement with mental health and addiction services.
