In March 2019, a woman in her 20s who was working as an au pair was sexually assaulted while she slept at an address in County Tipperary, after her underwear and tights were cut off. Brian Haig, a 40-year-old man from Roscrea, Co Tipperary, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to a single count of sexual assault. On 12 January 2023, Judge Cormac Quinn imposed an 18-month fully suspended sentence at Tipperary Circuit Court, and the DPP appealed it as unduly lenient. On 31 October 2023 the Court of Appeal quashed that sentence, set a fresh headline sentence of five years and resentenced Haig to three and a half years in prison with the final 12 months suspended.
