latest first- Trial ongoing over alleged assault during restraint in Galway Personal injury (alleged assault during restraint) · Co. Galway
Denise Callinan, a 23-year-old physical education and biology teacher from Manorhamilton, Co Leitrim, claims a male garda twisted her arm until it broke at Millstreet Garda station in Galway in the early hours of 19 October 2019, after she was arrested following an altercation with her brother near Eyre Square. She pleaded guilty to resisting arrest and drunk and disorderly behaviour that night, and an X-ray later revealed a spiral fracture of her left humerus. Callinan sued the Garda Commissioner for damages, naming retired garda inspector Brendan Moore, a 17-year use-of-force instructor, as the officer on duty. The civil trial opened before Judge Tony O'Connor and a jury in February 2026 and is ongoing.
