Brendan Gannon senior, a 63-year-old postman from Drimnagh, Dublin, was told by the National Driving Licence Service in January 2022 that he was disqualified from driving until 2025, when the seven-year ban actually belonged to his 40-year-old son of the same name. The son had been banned for seven years at Tallaght District Court in December 2018 for driving without insurance or a licence. After his solicitor's request to the prosecuting officer in May 2022 went unanswered, Mr Gannon senior brought a High Court challenge against the Road Safety Authority, the Garda Commissioner and the Courts Service. In late June 2022, Mr Justice Meenan granted leave to bring the challenge, imposed a stay on the driving ban, and adjourned the case to October 2022.
