Brendan Gahan, 39, from Tallaght, was allegedly stabbed in the neck with a home-made shiv in his cell at Wheatfield Prison, Dublin, at around 10pm on 13 August 2026, and died from catastrophic blood loss after the blade severed an artery. He had been serving a three-year, nine-month sentence for possession of drugs for sale or supply since December 2025. A man in his 40s from Finglas, north Dublin, was arrested on 15 August 2026 in connection with the death and released without charge on 16 August, with a file to be submitted to the DPP. The suspect was found to have an illegal phone concealed in his rectum when taken from the prison and was later handed a P19 after trashing his cell and abusing staff.

On Thursday night, 13 August 2026, 39-year-old Brendan Gahan from Tallaght died after an assault in his cell at Wheatfield Prison in Dublin, which he shared with another prisoner. He was serving a sentence of two years and nine months for possession of drugs for sale or supply. Gardaí, including detectives, attended the prison, the Garda Technical Bureau was due to examine the scene, and a post-mortem was to follow, and the Irish Prison Service said next of kin had been informed.
