Marius Mamaliga, a 19-year-old man, was stabbed once in the neck with a knife while sitting in his car at Forest Court, Swords, on the evening of 23 February 2023, and died in Beaumont Hospital three days later. Brandon Gavin, a man then aged 20, handed himself in to gardaí about an hour and 20 minutes after the incident and was initially charged under the Non-Fatal Offences Against the Person Act before being further charged with murder on the DPP's direction. Gavin pleaded not guilty, claiming self-defence over a drug debt, but a Central Criminal Court jury unanimously convicted him in November 2024 and he was sentenced to the mandatory term of life imprisonment in December 2024. His appeal to the Court of Criminal Appeal, heard on 23 February 2026, challenged the admissibility of Tinder and text message evidence, and the three-judge panel reserved judgment.
