• Man jailed for six years over dangerous driving death in Cork Dangerous driving causing death · Co. Cork

On 29 December 2022, a two-vehicle collision occurred at Dunkereen Cross, Innishannon, Co Cork, in which Paudie Palmer, a 65-year-old GAA broadcaster and sports journalist, was seriously injured. Palmer died at Cork University Hospital on 8 January 2023 from traumatic brain, spinal cord and thoracic injuries. Bohdan Bezverkhyi, a 35-year-old Ukrainian man, was arrested on 30 December 2022 and charged with dangerous driving causing death, to which he pleaded not guilty. After a mistrial in February 2024 when a juror visited the crash scene, a retrial at Cork Circuit Criminal Court returned a unanimous guilty verdict in April 2024. On 2 May 2024, Bezverkhyi was sentenced to seven and a half years' imprisonment with the final 18 months suspended and disqualified from driving for ten years.
