  • Norwegian sentenced for fraudulent rental agreement in Dublin Unauthorised use of vehicle (rental car driven abroad)

Bjorn Erlend Tveter, a 41-year-old Norwegian telecom engineer, used a false rental agreement with a former address to lease a rental car and drove it across Europe to Norway, clocking up 9,000 miles between November 10 and 25, 2020. The rental company was alerted when the car was caught speeding in Holland, and Tveter told them he would hold on to it for a couple of months before declining to surrender it to Norwegian police, who seized the vehicle and let him go. He was extradited to Ireland in January 2023 after being stopped travelling from Spain to Gibraltar. At Dublin Circuit Criminal Court, he pleaded guilty to use of a false instrument and was sentenced to 12 months with nine months suspended, backdated to January 13, 2023.
