Benedick Joel (46), of Carraig Art, Truskey West, Barna, Galway, who is originally from Nigeria, was a trusted family friend known to the children as "Uncle Ben". The court heard that he sexually abused two daughters of the family on dates in 2017 and 2018. The younger sister first reported the abuse in January 2022, and Joel was arrested but denied anything inappropriate had occurred. In February 2026 a Central Criminal Court jury convicted him of 24 counts of sexual assault and one count of attempted anal rape, which he does not accept, and in April 2026 Judge Kerida Naidoo jailed him for 14 years with consecutive sentences.
