latest first- Jerry McCabe murder under investigation 30 years after Adare shooting Murder · Co. Limerick
On 7 June 1996, Detective Garda Jerry McCabe, a 53-year-old Irish man from Co Kerry, was shot dead and his colleague Detective Garda Ben O'Sullivan was seriously wounded when an IRA gang rammed and opened fire on their unmarked patrol car escorting a post office cash van at Main Street, Adare, Co Limerick. Four men were charged with murder and attempted murder but their pleas to manslaughter were accepted by the State in 1999, and they were convicted in the Special Criminal Court; Pearse McAuley received 14 years and John Quinn six years for conspiracy to rob the van. The four men were released after serving their sentences, and McAuley was found dead at his home in Strabane, Co Tyrone, in March 2024. O'Sullivan died in 2022 at the age of 78. The investigation remains active 30 years on, with two suspects still to be questioned, one believed to be in Central America where there is no extradition treaty with Ireland.
