Two Nigerian men, Oluwagbewikeke Lewis, 36, and Bashiru Aderibigbe, 45, were sentenced at Cork Circuit Criminal Court on 10 November 2021 for conspiring to defraud the state of over €180,000 in Pandemic Unemployment Payments. Between April and December 2020, the pair used stolen PPS numbers of 74 HSE and Tusla employees, obtained through a data breach and a fake jury service email, to make 121 fraudulent PUP applications totalling €183,491 across 57 bank accounts. The fraud came to Garda attention in November 2020 when Lewis's car was stopped in Midleton, Co Cork, and false passports and bank statements were found. Both men pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit money laundering and Lewis to additional counts of possessing false passports and bank statements on 1 November 2021. Lewis was sentenced to three years and Aderibigbe to two-and-a-half years.
