On 29 October 2020, a woman was handed a package containing €17,472 worth of cocaine at Applegreen Service Station on the M1 in Castlebellingham, County Louth, after being told she was collecting fireworks. Barry McLaughlin, formerly of County Derry, was waiting in his car on the hard shoulder of the northbound carriageway, while Christopher Bergin, 36, of Dublin 17, and Jonathan Ivers, 39, of Dublin 5, were under garda surveillance. €12,000 in cash was found on Bergin, and a quantity of mixing agent was recovered in the operation. In December 2021, Bergin and Ivers were sent forward to Dundalk Circuit Court sitting in Drogheda on charges including possession of cocaine for sale or supply. In March 2025, McLaughlin and Bergin were each sentenced to four and a half years with the final 18 months suspended, while Ivers' sentencing was adjourned to July for an updated Probation report.
