• Man appeals rape conviction at Court of Appeal in Cork Rape · Co. Cork

Barry McDonagh, a 61-year-old man from Midleton, Co Cork, was found guilty by a jury of 17 counts of rape and one count of sexual assault for repeatedly sexually abusing his teenage sister-in-law, Pamela Mitchell, a 42-year-old woman, between 1999 and 2000 at his home and business premises. The Central Criminal Court trial concluded in June 2024, and Ms Justice Caroline Biggs sentenced him in October 2024 to seven and a half years, with a headline sentence of 10 years, a quarter suspended, and backdated to June 28. McDonagh maintains his innocence and has appealed his conviction at the Court of Appeal, where a three-judge panel reserved judgment in October 2025.
