latest first- Family challenges youth diversion in Ballymascanlon dangerous driving death Death (road traffic incident); dangerous driving causing death · Co. Louth
On 20 October 2020, Brogan Kelly, then 17, was driving an uninsured VW Passat at approximately 155km/h when it collided with an oncoming Ford Kuga at Ballymascanlon, Dundalk, Co Louth, killing 17-year-old passenger Barry Griffin Jnr. Kelly left the scene with the driver of a second car, a Mercedes, and went to Northern Ireland before presenting himself at Dundalk Garda Station. He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death at Dundalk Circuit Court, sitting in Drogheda, in November 2021 and was sentenced to five and a half years with the final 18 months suspended, along with concurrent sentences for other offences and a five-year driving ban. The Griffin family has since brought a High Court challenge to the decision to refer the Mercedes driver to the Garda Youth Diversion Programme, which Mr Justice Charles Meenan allowed on an ex-parte basis in December 2021.
