Cases
latest first- GSOC clears Cowen of evading Kildare drink-driving checkpoint Drink-driving; unauthorised dissemination of private information · Co. Kildare
In 2016, Barry Cowen was stopped at a Garda checkpoint near Leixlip, Co. Kildare, and failed a drink-driving test while on a provisional licence on his way home to Co. Offaly from Dublin after the All-Ireland football final. Taoiseach Micheál Martin removed him from Cabinet in July 2020 over the controversy, and Mr Cowen filed a complaint with the Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission that same month. A two-year GSOC inquiry, which analysed phone records and CCTV footage, found in September 2022 that Mr Cowen did not make a U-turn or attempt to evade the checkpoint. The inquiry recommended internal discipline for the garda who leaked his information, and the Ombudsman may refer the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
