Customs officers found 52kg of the amphetamine-based herbal drug khat, worth an estimated €26,000, in baggage at Terminal 1, Dublin Airport, on the afternoon of 1 May 2022. Antonius Van Deheijning, a 69-year-old Dutch man from Tilburg, was arrested and charged that evening at Ballymun Garda station with unlawful possession, possession for sale or supply, and illegal importation of the substance under the Misuse of Drugs Act. He appeared before Judge John Brennan at Dublin District Court on 2 May 2022, where no plea was indicated and no bail application was made. He was remanded in custody to appear via video link at Cloverhill District Court the following day for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.
